Letter: Congress should vote to impeach

On Jan. 6, violent insurrectionists, inspired and egged on by Donald Trump, stormed the Capitol in the hope of overturning the election of Joe Biden. Such an assault on our democracy must not stand.

Despite these attacks, in a display of reckless and dishonest partisanship, 147 Republican members of Congress voted to object to certification of the electoral votes from Arizona and Pennsylvania. To her credit, Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Battle Ground, not only voted against these spurious objections, but gave a powerful and impassioned speech against this attempt to subvert the Constitution. It took courage and principle to speak out.

The danger to the Constitution and the republic is not over yet, though, which is why more than 200 representatives have sponsored an impeachment resolution declaring that President Trump “has demonstrated that he will remain a threat to national security, democracy, and the Constitution if allowed to remain in office, and has acted in a manner grossly incompatible with self-governance and the rule of law.” I urge Rep. Herrera Beutler to join in the effort to save the Constitution and our democracy by adding her name as a sponsor and voting to impeach.
