Eight local players participate in All-State Baseball series in Yakima

Former King's Way Christian coach Gregg Swenson inducted into Hall of Fame

Eight players from Southwest Washington participated in the Washington Senior All-State Baseball series last weekend in Yakima.

Columbia River’s Nick Alder and Sawyer Parker, Skyview’s Kyle Olson and Mountain View’s Riley McCarthy played for Team Adams, which was coached by Skyview’s Seth Johnson. Johnson also brought along his assistant coach Mindy Williams Cleeland, who became the first female coach at the all-state series.

La Center’s Irving Alvarez and Kalama’s Shayden Jones played for Team Baker. Battle Ground’s Tyson Lindemood played for Team St. Helens, and Evergreen’s Russell Fearington played for Team Rainier.

Team Baker beat Team Adams 6-5 on Saturday. Alder led off the game with a single and later pitched for Team Adams. McCarthy went 2 for 5 with a double and three RBI. Team Rainier beat Team St. Helens 10-9 with Lindemood going 1 for 3 with run and three RBI.

On Sunday, Team St. Helens beat Team Adams 6-1 for third place as McCarthy went 1 for 1 with two stolen bases and a run, and Parkin pitched for Team Adams. Team Baker then beat Team Rainier 4-3 in the championship game.

Also last weekend, former King’s Way Christian coach Gregg Swenson was inducted into the Washington State Basseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Swenson also coached at Sehome High School, Tacoma Community College, the University of Washington, Washington State and the University of Portland in his three decades of coaching.
