PORTLAND — A Beaverton police officer on Wednesday night shot and injured a person who police said was suspected of burglarizing a home earlier in the day.

The suspect was injured both by police bullets and a self-inflicted gunshot wound when they tried to discharge a weapon, according to police.

The shooting took place at Southwest 14th Avenue and Alger Street, a residential area off Southwest Allen Boulevard. Police did not release the name or any identifying information about the person who was injured, nor about their current condition. They did not identify the officer who fired shots.

Police said they began chasing the burglary suspect after the person fled on foot. The person entered a fenced-in backyard of a home on Southwest 14th and Alger, and officers followed, while telling the suspect to stop. Police said during the chase the burglary suspect took out a gun and fired it, injuring themselves. A police officer also fired, striking the person.
