On the Opinion page in the Feb. 28 edition of The Columbian, the cartoon of balancing “Goodies” with “Pork” says it all. Unfortunately, the cartoon does not represent the seriousness of what Congress is proposing in their $1.9 trillion “stimulus” package. For those who have never seen a trillion written numerically, here goes: 1,000,000,000,000. And we’re now talking a little less than $2 trillion this time. And, by the way, we’ve still got $1 trillion left over from the last $4 trillion stimulus package.
The population of the U.S. is 331,002,503 counting every man, woman and child. If you divide that population into the $1.9 trillion figure, you get $5,740, but only about half of the population is eligible for a stimulus check, due to an income disqualification by the legislation. One has to ask, why isn’t the half of the population that qualifies getting twice that amount, or $11,480, yet they will only get $1,400? Think about that. Your elected representatives will be raiding the Treasury, running up an unconscionable level of additional debt, leaving future generations to pay off this “pork barrel and special interests” debt, which has nothing to do with the COVID-19 pandemic. The cartoon says it all.
