Limitations on practice hours, competitions

Multi-sport athletes in the 4A/3A Greater St. Helens League have received some good news.

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association has granted a waiver this year to a rule that limited athletes to one sport per season.

The 4A/3A GSHL has a plan this season to hold traditional winter and spring sports concurrently during the league’s Season 2, which will start April 12.

Now athletes can participate in a winter and spring sport at the same time, provided certain conditions are met.

Approval from the school superintendent or principal is required.

The two sports that are being played cannot both be contact sports. In Season 2 of the 4A/3A GSHL calendar, contact sports are basketball, soccer and wrestling.

So, for example, an athlete who competed in wrestling in the winter in past seasons and then played boys soccer in the spring would not be able to compete in both sports during Season 2.

The minimum practice requirement must be met in each sport prior to competing in a contest.

Athletes can not exceed 18 hours of practice and competition in both sports during a week.

Athletes also can not participate in more than four competitions combined for both sports per week. Culminating events would be excluded from the weekly competition limit.
