WASHOUGAL — Beloved longtime community volunteer and Navy veteran Robert “Bob” Peake was surprised by a drive-by celebration for his 90th birthday hosted by the VFW Post 4278 Camas on March 28.

A lifelong resident of Washougal, he’s the past Camas Days King and a former volunteer firefighter and support staff member at the Portland VA, the VA Medical Campus in Vancouver and more.

Washougal Mayor Molly Coston attended the event along with members of the group Patriot Guard, which presented Peake with a wood flag.

Peake joined the Navy in 1950, serving in Korea. He joined the VFW Post 4278 in the early 1970s.

“Any veteran, after they’ve been schooled and through conflicts … some people can’t understand the closeness, but it’s special to be with others who’ve been through the same thing,” he said, according to a news release.
