Letter: Don’t ignore history

The human race has some savage history. Our nation did not escape that. Compared to others, the wealth and power we have is astounding.

But is our greatness to be measured by wealth and power alone? Are we to ignore our history and its many bumps along the road toward a more perfect union? Should we deny the true history that many of us were never taught? The foundation of a nation originally built in part on slavery? The treatment of Native Americans based on someone’s idea of manifest destiny? The horrific treatment of African Americans in particular, and often other people of color as well?

I do not need to ignore an accurate accounting of our history in order to appreciate the potential we have and the greatness we have on occasion collectively shown. There are many fine aspects of our culture for which we need not be ashamed — indeed we can celebrate them. But to do so blindly does a disservice to the reality of our evolution as a nation. We should be moving forward, aware of the past, and working toward a future that helps us realize the true potential we have for greatness.
