Kalama converted all four of its shots during the penalty kick shootout, with junior Elyse DiCristina providing the clincher as Kalama beat Highland 2-1 in the semifinal of the 2B/1B girls soccer state tournament Friday in Sumner.
Kalama will play Adna, which beat Toledo in a PK shootout, for the state title at 3 p.m. Saturday at Sunset Chev Stadium.
Kailey Shipley gave Kalama a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute, taking a long pass from defender Ava Beck and converting a breakaway.
The Chinooks battled to hold onto that lead, but Highland evened when Ivette Ramos punched in a penalty kick in the 78th minute.
After two scoreless overtimes, the match went to penalty kicks where Kalama was a perfect four for four on Highland goalkeeper Aylin Aguilera, an eighth grader. Josie Brandenburg, Marin Ripp, Sophie Given converted shots before DiCristina.
Highland went wide with its first attempt. And after back-to-back converts, Kalama goalkeeper Jessica Meyer made a stop on Ramos’ attempt, setting up DiCristina’s winner.
