A structure at a homeless camp in the trees between northeast Hazel Dell and Interstate 5 burned down Monday afternoon, according to Clark County Fire District 6.

Engines from Fire District 6 and the Vancouver Fire Department responded around 3:45 p.m. to the 5400 block of Hazel Dell Avenue. Callers had reported seeing smoke from I-5.

Crews found an approximately 10-by-10-foot structure built on the hillside of the freeway fully engulfed in flames, according to Fire District 6 Battalion Chief Scott Reamer. No one was there at the time, he said, and no one was injured.

The unpermitted structure was completely destroyed, but crews contained the fire to the structure, Reamer said.
