Vancouver local serves in the Navy

The Columbian

VANCOUVER — A Vancouver native is serving in the U.S. Navy as part of the world’s largest international maritime warfare exercise, Rim of the Pacific.

Airman Rostyslylav Herashchenko is an aviation boatswain’s mate aboard USS Abraham Lincoln, a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier operating out of San Diego.

A Navy aviation boatswain’s mate is responsible for supervising aircraft movement, spotting and securing aircraft and equipment ashore and afloat.

Aircraft carriers provide unique capabilities and survivability. They are a powerful exhibition of the American Navy’s legacy of innovation, technological evolution, and maritime dominance, according to Navy officials.
