BELLINGHAM — One person was killed and at least one other person was injured on icy roads across Whatcom County late Tuesday, Jan. 4.

A snowplow truck hit and killed a pedestrian on Highway 9 south of Deming, the Washington State Patrol tweeted about 7 p.m. Tuesday.

“Our hearts go out to those affected by this incident. Troopers are on scene investigating and there is currently no detour. Please avoid the area and be safe,” Trooper Jacob Kennett tweeted.

Highway 9 was closed for the crash investigation but was open Wednesday, Jan. 5.

No further information was immediately available about the pedestrian’s death or the crash.

Icy conditions were reported throughout Whatcom County, Kennett said in a separate tweet.

“It’s snowing and there’s freezing rain in places across the district,” Kennett tweeted. “If you don’t have to be out and about please stay home. If you do find yourself needing to commute, drive safely and employ good winter weather driving tactics.”

Slippery roads were also blamed for a crash that injured a Nooksack woman on Everson-Goshen Road about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, the state patrol said in a report on the incident.
