Letter: Republicans seek political weapon

As we continue to battle the coronavirus; as people die from this infection; as people’s lives, and the economy are upended, for two years now, with no end in sight, I’d like to say something to Republicans: Thanks for nothing!

I may have missed it, but I don’t remember any Republican giving a frank and earnest talk to their constituents regarding the facts about COVID-19: that without a community effort to control this disease with masking, distancing and vaccinations, widespread disease and death was imminent.

Instead, Republican leadership chose to make this disease a political weapon; to add it to the culture war they know divides Americans while solidifying their base of voters. Republicans choose to fuel the disinformation, and pander to fear and rage, as America struggles to breathe.

Oh, I know the sort of phone calls office staffers must have fielded: The tyranny. The suffocating masks. The deadly experimental vaccination. The deep state. I also know that no one wins an election without the base. Republicans choose reelection.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
