Elmer’s Restaurants Inc. is moving its Portland offices to Vancouver to find a better quality of life for its employees, according to its president, Jerry Scott.
The restaurant chain, which manages 10 restaurants on the West Coast, including Vancouver’s Elmer’s at 11310 S.E. Mill Plain Blvd., has its main offices in Eugene, Ore.
The new offices for Portland operations will move to 1111 Main St. in downtown Vancouver on July 11. About 14 employees are moving over from the Portland office, at 8338 N.E. Alderwood Road, Portland.
Most of the business’s employees in the Portland office live in Clark County, so the move will make it possible to avoid Oregon income taxes and reduce commute time. It’s a common reason for many businesses moving to Vancouver from Oregon.
Jill Ramos, vice president of Elmer’s Restaurants, lives in Vancouver. She said she’s looking forward to saving money by not having to pay Oregon income tax.
Scott also noted Vancouver’s new waterfront, which is a draw. The city also doesn’t deal with the severity of homelessness and crime as much as Portland, which appeals to him.
“I think Vancouver does a better job with the homeless,” he said.
Elmer’s Restaurants is also opening the area’s first Egg N’ Joe on 192nd Avenue near Costco on the border between Camas and east Vancouver. There are three locations in Phoenix, and the Vancouver location will be its fourth.
