Check It Out: Picture books purrfect for National Kitten Day

I simply can’t pass up writing a column devoted to National Kitten Day because, well, kittens! This purrfect day takes place on July 10, and it makes me happy just thinking about it.

Some of the best books about kitties are children’s picture books, and this is where I found inspiration for today’s reading list. Written with little ones in mind, picture books use text and illustrations (and sometimes just illustrations) to tell stories. Here’s the best part, though: picture books have the ability to delight all ages and all levels of readers.

As a cat mom to two adorable cat boys, I will fur-ever be a crazy cat lady (crazy optional, of course). Felines may not come when they’re called or greet you at the door with tails a-wagging, but these beautiful, mysterious, funny, independent creatures know how to fill a home with soul. Of course, I know that my own tiny tigers rule the house, and my husband and I just live in it. I’m OK with that.

I hope you enjoy these charming kitty-themed picture books whether your human years are equal to five, 95 or anything in between. Heed this advice: purr more, hiss less.

  • “Emergency Kittens!” written by Jody Jensen Shaffer, illustrated by Dave Mottram.
