Golf is a game of adjustments, and so is life when you’re a college freshman.

That’s what Vancouver golfer Graham Moody experienced during his freshman year at the University of Wisconsin.

“It was a good learning experience,” Moody said Friday at the Royal Oaks Invitational Tournament.

“It took a while to adjust. Once I got settled in, it was a lot of fun. It’s a good group of guys and we all bonded really well. … The biggest (adjustment) is just being on your own and managing your time, balancing school and golf and spending time with friends.”

And adjusting to college golf had its challenges as well.

“The college golf itself is a lot more higher intensity,” the Mountain View High graduate said. “There are a lot more difficult set-ups, and that was something I had to get used to as well.”

But the adjustments have paid off. Three weeks ago, Moody won the Northwest Open Invitational in Dupont with an 11-under 205 for 72 holes.

“That was a big win, three days up at the Home Course,” Moody said. “That was kind of my first big tournament back from school. I played well, putted really well and didn’t make too many bogeys.”

After the ROIT this weekend, Moody plans to play in the Oregon Open in Sunriver, Ore., June 14-16 before returning to Wisconsin to play a couple of summer tournaments.

“Then I’ll come home for a couple of weeks before heading back to Wisconsin in early August,” he said.

Moody hopes to keep his momentum going at the ROIT, where he shot a 1-over 73 in the first round Friday.

“It was a good first round,” Moody said. “You definitely can’t win it on the first day, but you can lose it. I played pretty well on the front, but then a couple of bad breaks on the back and also a couple of bad swings. I had a couple of bogeys coming in, so I think there’s definitely things to work on and hopefully I can make some more putts tomorrow.”

Late Friday, the tournament website that posts results indicated the scores were being reviewed and had not been released.

The tournament continues Saturday with the final round set for Sunday at Royal Oaks Country Club.
