Letter: Authoritarians are oppressive

In Our Readers’ Views, Marjorie Casswell warns of the oppressive future our country faces if the ultra right wing manages to take over (“Fascism is threat in U.S.,” Feb. 24). That Trumpist base may think they will be a privileged class. They need to think again.

People in Trump’s base are only tools for those who would hold the real power. Dictatorial authority would be wielded by a select few, and once they control the levers of government, they will crush the unsuspecting loyal base the hardest. As Ms. Casswell says of authoritarians, “They oppress opposition, demand absolute obedience.”

In the classic George Orwell book “1984” and films of the same title, we are warned of an authoritarian world under the cult of a godlike Big Brother. There, supposedly privileged class members are targeted for surveillance and cruelly punished for even unwitting behavioral breaches. That’s what awaits those who hunger for Trumpism. They won’t know what hit them.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
