Letter: We do not live in a theocracy

Marcus Lind, in a recent letter, says that what matters is what God says about abortion (“What matters is what God says,” Our Readers’ Views, Feb. 22). Leaving aside that not all religions agree that God bans abortions, I thought it was important to point out that we do not live in a theocracy; our laws do not need to follow any particular religion’s constraints.

It would be great if no woman ever had an unwanted pregnancy, or a pregnancy where the fetus had severe medical issues. Alas, in real life that isn’t the case. We need safe and legal abortions for those cases when terminating a pregnancy is the best option. And I would never tell someone what the best option is for her; that’s between her, her doctor, and the father of the fetus if he is still around and on good terms with the pregnant woman.

No one is forced to get an abortion if it violates their beliefs; but no one should be forced to carry an unwanted pregnancy to term.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
