Letter: Letter about abortion is offensive

Who doesn’t enjoy a beer while reading The Columbian, then writes a letter to the editor and hits “send”?

That might explain Mr. Hartley’s appallingly inaccurate and misogynistic letter “Women should take responsibility” (Our Readers’ Views, Nov. 13). His letter underlines our critical need for more sex education in our schools.

Mr. Hartley apparently isn’t aware that no birth control is 100 percent reliable. He ignores that in the state of Washington, women have agency over their own health. To place responsibility on procreation and its repercussions on only half of our population is deeply offensive.

The charge that any sector of our community should “rise up and take responsibility for their actions,” and to not continue to “grovel in the filthy practice of killing their children” is more appropriate for reactive social media sites, not for letters to the editor to The Columbian, which seeks to offer thoughtful, diverse opinions worthy of discussion.

Mr. Hartley’s screed is deeply offensive. One would never dare promote such a charge against any other segment of our population (grovel? filthy? killing?), yet Mr. Hartley has taken a deep dive into attacking a segment of our population with shoddy justification. We are better than that.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
