Re: Mr. Collins’ letter “Rent an EV before buying” (Our Readers’ Views, Nov. 16):
One, turning on the HVAC/AC system in my car shows the driver both the car’s estimated remaining mileage with the system on and off. The range is heavily affected by usage of this system, it’s true, but the driver is not ignorant of it and can control it to suit the occupants’ comfort level as well as the car’s range.
Two, I use an app called “PlugShare” that shows not only the location of 240V chargers, but the fast DC chargers that are being installed along major roadways. My experience is that it takes about an hour to go from 20 percent to 80 percent, but many of the fast chargers are installed in malls and near restaurants, enabling the driver to grab a bite while charging up.
Three, we’ve taken our Kona several times up to Seattle with ease, topped it off, and then returned home. Yes, one must monitor the resulting energy usage, and maybe go 70 mph instead of 75 mph on Interstate 5, but the machine works like any other car.
