A Washougal woman was killed in a crash Tuesday afternoon on state Highway 14 near Mt. Pleasant Road.

Washington State Patrol troopers responded at 2:11 p.m. to a two-vehicle crash on the highway near the Clark-Skamania county line.

Investigators determined a Toyota C-HR, driven by Vincent J. Carnera, 31, of Washougal, was traveling east near Milepost 21. Carnera’s Toyota then crossed the center line and crashed head-on into a Subaru Impreza, driven by Thomas D. Schafer, 61, of Washougal, according to a State Patrol crash memo.

Schafer’s passenger, Mary E. Schafer, 73, was pronounced dead at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center in Vancouver, the crash memo states.

Thomas Schafer was injured and also taken to PeaceHealth Southwest, according to the State Patrol. Carnera and his 2-year-old passenger were also injured and taken to Legacy Emmanuel Medical Center in Portland.

Troopers said excessive speed was a factor in the crash. Investigators said drugs and alcohol were not factors.

The crash memo states charges against Carnera are pending.
