“Dems see Johnson as ‘spoiler’ in 3-way Oregon governor’s race” (The Columbian, Oct. 14) illustrates the need for ranked choice voting. In addition to the Democratic and Republican candidates, there is an unaffiliated candidate drawing double-digit support. This may be enough to swing the race to the least-preferred candidate. So voters in favor of this nonaligned candidate face a dilemma: vote their heart and possibly contribute to the election of their least-favored candidate or hold their noses and vote for the “lesser of two evils.”
I am tired of being forced into that unsavory choice. With ranked choice, my vote declares “first this, and if that doesn’t work, then here’s my second choice.” Problem solved.
