Cruise still flies high in ‘Maverick’

A sequel where Tom Cruise once again feels the need for speed tops the DVD releases for the week of Nov. 1.

“Top Gun: Maverick”: The long-awaited follow-up to “Top Gun” finds Maverick returning to flight school to teach the new naval aviators a thing or two about flying. Among those joining the cast for the sequel are Jennifer Connelly, Miles Teller, Jon Hamm and Monica Barbaro, while Val Kilmer poignantly reprises his role as Iceman.

“There might be new pilots on deck, but make no mistake, this is a Maverick movie through and through,” writes Tribune News Service critic Katie Walsh in her review. “Tom Cruise isn’t done with ‘Top Gun’ yet, and he’s not letting go of big, emotional and deeply human blockbuster moviemaking without a fight. He’s indeed the hero that the movies need right now.”

“Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul.”: A disgraced Southern Baptist preacher and his first lady, played by Sterling K. Brown and Regina Hall respectively, hire a documentary crew to follow them on their grand reopening in this satire skewering the hypocrisy of organized religion.

“Dark Winds: Season 1”: Zahn McClarnon stars in AMC’s Navajo noir set in 1970s New Mexico and based on Tony Hillerman’s “Leaphorn & Chee” novel.

“Euphoria: Seasons 1-2”: Contains both seasons of HBO’s edgy teen drama from showrunner Sam Levinson, for which Zendaya has twice won the Emmy for best actress in a drama series.

“One Way”: Musician Machine Gun Kelly stars in this gritty action film about a small-time criminal on the run after stealing cash and drugs from a gang boss.

“Rubikon”: It’s the end of the world as they know it, but they’re stuck up there on a space station, in this sci-fi thriller that takes place in 2056.

“Young Rock: Season Two”: The second season of the NBC sitcom about the life of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, which is set across several timelines via flashbacks, gets a Blu-ray release ahead of the show’s Season 3 premiere on Nov. 4.
