Evan Mendez of Fort Vancouver is the 2022 Week 3 prep football player of the week

Mendez beat out Mateo Varona of Hudson's Bay for weekly honor

Fort Vancouver’s Evan Mendez is The Columbian 2022 Week 3 high school football player of the week.

Mendez received 431 votes to outdistance Mateo Varona of Hudson’s Bay in the weekly vote.

Mendez caught eight passes for 199 yards and three touchdowns, including the game-winner in a win over Stevenson. The win snapped an 18-game losing streak for the Trappers.

Winners of the player-of-the-week may not be nominated again during the regular season, and no player may be nominated in consecutive weeks.

Here’s what the other nominees accomplished:

DEACON DIETZ, MARK MORRIS: Dietz rushed for 241 yards and two touchdowns on 30 carries in a league win over Columbia River.

AIDEN NICHOLSON, MOUNTAIN VIEW: Nicholson caught nine passes for 254 yards and five touchdowns in a win over Union.

MATEO VARONA, HUDSON’S BAY: Varona rushed for 234 yards and three TDs on 15 carries, a 30-yard catch and a 37-yard pass in a win over R.A. Long.

ADAM WATTS, COLUMBIA RIVER: Watts passed for 301 yards and three touchdowns, rushed for 127 yards and two TDS and had 45-yard reception in a loss to Mark Morris.
