As temperatures hit triple digits, the Portland-Vancouver area is under an air quality advisory as smog is expected to reach unhealthy levels through this evening.

The Southwest Clean Air Agency issued an advisory as reports show several locations in the Vancouver metropolitan area will experience ozone pollution that is “unhealthy for sensitive groups,” which is valued between 101 to 150 on the Air Quality Index. A higher air quality index means there is a greater level of pollution and potential health risks.

Officials recommend people with existing health conditions, such as asthma or heart disease, stay indoors as air pollution is high. Older adults, people who are pregnant and children should also limit time outdoors. Smog can irritate one’s eyes, nose and lungs, as well as cause breathing problems.

To improve air quality, locals are urged to reduce pollution from cars, mowers, paint and aerosol sprays.

Transportation options in Vancouver can be found at www.c-tran.com or by calling 360-695-0123. Weather forecasts are available at www.nws.noaa.gov.
