As a Vietnam veteran, I’ve become accustomed to those large noises that some of my fellow citizens seem determined to demonstrate on July 4.
But I made the mistake of going out to my porch to watch the red rocket glares and was hit with the acrid smoke hanging over the neighborhood as if it was coming from a 105mm howitzer; that drove me back inside with memories I would just as soon forget.
Then, I saw the headline that said there were six fires in the county from fireworks, possibly one house burned down (“Fireworks spark six fires in Clark County, cause nearly $1M in damage,” The Columbian, July 5).
I guess you can’t fix stupidity.
