Weather Eye: June was dry for most; rain chances doubtful for July

Yes, there was some rain that fell in June so let’s review rainfall from our friends and neighbors around the area. Bob Starr, Cougar, 1.08 inches; Jim Knoll, Five Corners, 0.80 of an inch; Robin Ruzek, Lakeshore, 0.73 of an inch; Chuck Houghten, Hockinson Heights, 0.93 of an inch; Tyler Mode, Battle Ground, 1.01 inches; Bob Mode, Minnehaha, 0.65 of an inch; Dick Lenahan, Meadow Glade, 0.85 of an inch; Dave Campbell, Amboy, 1.30 inches; Bill Sobolewski, Livingston Mt., 1.17 inches; and Judy Weber, near View, 0.79 of an inch. Our friend Roland Derksen in Vancouver, B.C. reported 1.26 inches. The official rainfall for Vancouver USA was only 0.78 of an inch, 0.83 of an inch below average.

As you can see, June was a dry month for most. Bob Starr in Cougar measured 1.08 inches, which is far from his long time average of 4.04 inches. Dave Campbell has two rain gauges and his other gauge recorded over 5 inches in June. Remember those heavy thunderstorms June 18? Vancouver had nearly one-half inch and Portland measured nearly 1 inch. So mostly dry, continuing the trend from May but a few outliers.

OK, we got the rain out of the way for last month and it is doubtful we will see any in the gauge here in Vancouver the rest of July. A few foothill locations reported a few hundreds of an inch from drizzle earlier in the month.

That cool off at the beginning of this week was short-lived with a high Monday of 77 degrees. Tuesday it bounced back to the mid- to upper 80s. Wednesday’s high was expected to be in the low to mid-90s. Fortunately, we knock a few degrees off Thursday through the weekend, but highs are still a little above average in the 80s.

I mentioned the other day that we can usually expect about 14 or 15 days at 90 degrees or higher. So far this year we have had five days in May, only one day in June and six days so far in July. Hey, an even dozen! More 90s on the way, I’m sure.

Enjoy summer.
