Letter: Be cautious about Opill

Though FDA reviewers expressed concerns about the safety of dispensing Opill without a prescription, a panel of advisers recommended that Opill be sold without a prescription. The FDA reviewers cited numerous concerns about the drug, including the ability of users to know when the drug could cause dangerous or deadly complications, and flaws in the manufacturer’s data.

The product packaging failed to clearly warn users of the dangers associated with the use of hormonal contraceptives, including cancer, higher risk of heart attacks, cardiovascular disease and HIV.

The Mayo Clinic lists over 113 medications not recommended for use with oral contraceptives like Opill. Yet, the expert panel insisted on making Opill available to females without oversight. Persons considering using Opill should carefully review studies showing these and other concerns before using Opill.
