CASCADE PARK — In a battle across state lines, the Mountain View High School team defeated a Lake Oswego, Ore., team and won the 31st annual Bonneville Power Administration Regional Science Bowl at the University of Portland.

Mountain View emerged undefeated to advance to the Department of Energy’s National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C., at the end of April. Lake Oswego High School teams placed second and third, while Sunset High School Team 1 of Portland was fourth.

Roughly 170 students from public and private high school teams across Western Washington and Oregon competed in the nation’s second-largest regional science bowl.

The bowl is an intense academic event, using a “Jeopardy!”-style, round-robin format that showcases students’ talents in science, technology, engineering and math. This year, the event returned to an in-person contest after the COVID-19 pandemic compelled BPA to host the 2022 bowl virtually and cancel the 2021 competition.
