In response to a solar energy project at the Port of Camas-Washougal (The Columbian, May 2): Solar energy is the cheapest and easiest way to provide electricity for our population growth.
The Port of Camas-Washougal is allowing the public to use its roofs at no charge for community solar, and Clark Public Utilities will do all the contractor vetting and credit your account for the energy your panels produce. The expected payback time is 12.5 years. After that, it’s all gravy.
Starting in June, you can purchase and own one or more solar panels in their Community Solar Project. Businesses and governments may also apply.
The advantage of a community solar project is that the contractors bid on one large project rather than 500 smaller ones. One project requires fewer inverters and metering systems and achieves economies of scale.
