Raising Clark County, a multiphase project to identify how to prioritize and build community support to create stable, nurturing environments for children and families, will be reviewed by the Clark County Board of Health at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.

According to a Public Health report, Raising Clark County is based on a strong foundation of research and practice in the science of child development. The goal is to create and implement policies and practices that will improve outcomes for children and families.

Staff from the program will review data collected during 2022, the scientific research and theory behind the work and how to implement policies. Melissa Martin from Public Health, Rekah Strong from Educational Opportunities for Children and Families and Debbie Ham from Support for Early Learning and Families will discuss how data was collected, findings from the data, the role policymakers have and highlight opportunities for the Board of Health to engage with families and community partners.

The Raising Clark County project includes four phases. The first phase, which was completed between August and November of 2021, identified prevention strategies already in place in the county.

The second phase took place from December 2021 through May 2022. Data was gathered from pregnant mothers and caregivers on birthing/raising a young child in Clark County.

The third phase will be complete in June and will identify recommended approaches to supporting families and children. The fourth phase will begin in July and will examine how recommended approaches are being implemented.

Public Health has discussed the origins of this work with the Board of Health in past years and examined the relationship between serious, negative events in childhood and increased risk for poorer physical and mental health outcomes in adulthood. Preventing these negative events and promoting positive experiences and resiliency in children and families is the focus of the local effort.

Clark County Board of Health meetings can be attended in person in the sixth-floor hearing room of the Public Service Center, 1300 Franklin St. in Vancouver or watch live online at www.cvtv.org.
