Portland police issued a traffic citation to the driver who rear-ended a 68-year-old Woodland man last month on Interstate 5. The Woodland man died in the crash.

John V. Bayes, 48, of Eugene was cited Thursday for careless driving contributing to an accident, according to a Portland police news release.

Bayes was driving a Mercedes Sprinter van when he crashed into the rear of Mark S. Sinclair’s Honda Accord as Sinclair slowed for traffic. Three other occupied vehicles were also struck, Portland police said.

Portland police responded at 3:31 p.m. to the crash on I-5 south at North Failing Street. Sinclair was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a police news release.

No one was taken to area hospitals. Bayes stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Police are continuing to investigate.
