Jacob Champine rushed for two touchdowns and the Battle Ground defense notched its most impressive effort of the season in a 23-0 win over Lakes on Friday at District Stadium.

Champine rushed for 87 yards on 28 carries. His 1-yard touchdown run gave the Tigers (6-0) a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.

When Battle Ground drives stalled, Bryland Fick converted three field goals as the Tigers built a 16-0 lead early in the fourth quarter.

Champine shined on defense as well, intercepting a pass in the fourth quarter and returning it to the Lakes 1. That set up Champine’s second touchdown run.

Saveily Tkachenko, Artem Bahnyuk and Cody Huntsinger also shined on defense for the Tigers, who recorded their fourth shutout of the season. Battle Ground has only allowed 14 points all season.

Battle Ground, which is 6-0 for the first time since 1991, opens 4A Greater St. Helens League play on Thursday at Union.
