Letter: ‘Both sides’ are not the same

The “In Our View” really bothered me (“House disarray begs for moderates to step up,” Oct. 5). I am sick and tired of the “both sides” baloney. Labeling Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar as “extremists” and comparing them to Matt Gaetz and Marjorie Taylor Greene is like comparing pillows and kangaroos.

Here are some glaring differences:

The entire Republican Party has become a cult that worships a criminal, idolizes dictators and cheers those in their party who want to replace our democracy with fascism. Every time their “dear leader” spews his hatred of someone who does not bow to him it inspires his followers to stochastic terrorism against that person. THAT is extremism.

By contrast, the Progressive Caucus of the Democratic Party, of which Reps. Ocasio-Cortez and Omar (and Bernie Sanders) are members, strongly supports our democracy and the rights therein. They do not wave guns around, scream obscenities at others or accuse those who hold different beliefs of being “the enemy” or “traitors.” If you want to know what the progressive movement is really about, I recommend you read “The Progressive Promise.” If you do not choose to learn the truth you will continue to live in delusion.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
