Letter: Cars remain dominant mode

It’s sort of ironic. The city plans to spend $1.5 million to “calm” (impede) the traffic on 34th Street. While a half-mile away the state is spending $25 million to ease traffic. For the $1.5 million we’ll get green paint, white paint, those ugly white posts (which will have to be replaced periodically) and maybe even some of those $150 zebradillos. I’m guessing 34th was intended to be a thoroughfare to get traffic to 164th Avenue and state Highway 14, not necessarily to be nice to bikers.

I’ve biked through the area for over 10 years and have no problem getting from downtown to Fisher’s Landing on roads with existing bike lanes and very low traffic. A week ago, I saw a biker on 34th Street. It was the second I’d seen in over 10 years. The “calming committee” must be under the same delusion as a previous writer who opined that someday cars will not be dominant form of transportation. Right — and someday sheep will fly.
