Girls basketball: Washougal holds back Mark Morris, 54-53

Washougal started fast and Mark Morris nearly caught up.

The Panthers had to hold off a furious fourth-quarter rally by the visiting Monarchs to pick up the 2A Greater St. Helens League victory 54-53 on Friday.

Washougal (7-6, 5-3 2A GSHL) led 43-32 going into the final eight minutes and were outscored 21-11 and still came out on top.

“We made it interesting at the end of the game, but we have to make offensive rebounds to deserve to win,” Mark Morris coach Sean Atkins said.

Jenna Klopman scored 16 points and Ireland Albaugh had 10 for the Panthers.

Mark Morris (6-4, 4-3) was led by Reese Johnson, who scored 10 of her 16 points in the fourth quarter. She also had seven rebounds and seven steals.

R.A. LONG 52, FORT VANCOUVER 50 — Brianna Garwood made a driving lay-in with 5 seconds left as the Lumberjills won a tight 2A GSHL game at home.

R.A. Long tied the game on two free throws by Alauna Brown after a Fort player received a technical foul with 15.9 seconds to play.

After starting the season 0-8, R.A. Long has won three of its last four games.

April Cruz scored 15 points to lead Fort Vancouver.

WOODLAND 58, HUDSON’S BAY 49 — Kennedy Bockert scored a game-high 28 points as Woodland broke away in the second quarter en route to the 2A GSHL victory over visiting Hudson’s Bay.

The game was tied 19-19 after the first quarter and then Woodland (6-6, 4-3) outscored Hudson’s Bay (6-3, 4-3) in the second quarter 21-8 to build its advantage for the rest of the game.

Addi Stading added 10 points for the Beavers.

Hudson’s Bay was led in scoring by Alana Stephens and Avi Desjarlais with 10 points each.

CAMAS 76, BATTLE GROUND 14 — All 11 players on the roster scored as the Papermakers improved to 3-0 in the 4A GSHL.

Kierra Thompson scored 15 points to lead Camas, the state’s No. 1 team in the Class 4A RPI rankings. Addison Harris added 12 points and Reagan Jamison had 10 points and eight rebounds.

Through the first-round of league play, Camas has beaten its three 4A GSHL rivals by an average score of 74-28.

UNION 56, SKYVIEW 50 — Union finished the game with an 11-2 run, capped by Rowyn Riley’s 3-pointer in the final minute, to win a 4A GSHL game.

Union was up by 10 at halftime, but Skyview rallied back to take a 48-45 lead in the fourth quarter.

Brooklynn Haywood had 21 points to lead Union, while Riley had 10 and Ava Smith added 11.

Lainey Phillips led Skyview with 11 points.

MCKINNON (AUSTRALIA) 64, PRAIRIE 34 — Harmony Fallin and Emma Smith had 10 points each for Prairie.
