YAKIMA — Repairs to the Interstate 90 Vantage Bridge have begun, and drivers should expect single-lane closures and delays until late fall.

The Washington State Department of Transportation and a contractor, Garco Construction, began work Monday to build an access under the bridge to replace its existing bridge deck, a WSDOT news release said.

Crews will replace the deck with pre-cast concrete panels to minimize closures and delays.

The bridge will have single-lane closures going in both directions Monday through Friday until the end of May. Starting late May, traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction seven days a week.

All lanes on the bridge will open fully on the following holidays: Memorial Day weekend: All lanes open from 7 a.m. Friday, May 24, until 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 28; Fourth of July week: All lanes open from 7 a.m. Monday, July 1, until 8 p.m. Monday, July 8; Labor Day weekend: All lanes open from 7 a.m. Friday, Aug. 30, until 8 p.m. Monday Sept. 3.

The WSDOT said travelers will experience long delays eastbound on Fridays and westbound on Sundays during the summer, and are encouraged to choose other routes.

All lanes on the bridge will reopen in late fall and winter from November to April.
