Several homes in Battle Ground were evacuated Tuesday morning after a construction accident. The ruptured line was first reported at about 9:30 a.m.

The rotten egg smell that characterizes gas leaks was reportedly being smelled throughout downtown.

Clark County Fire & Rescue and the Battle Ground Police Department responded to the leak.

Fire Capt. David Greenwood said firefighters closed off Southeast Second Avenue from First Street to Second Street and Southeast First Avenue from First Street to Second Street for about 40 minutes.

NW Natural officials fixed the line in about 20 minutes, Greenwood said.
