People in business
• Dr. Allen Gabriel of Southwest Medical Group Plastic Surgery is being recognized this month as a board certified plastic surgeon by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Board certification ensures that a doctor has graduated from an accredited medical school and has completed five years or more of additional training as a resident surgeon in a program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Medical Education.
• Brenen Palmersheim joined the West Vancouver mortgage branch of MetLife Home Loans, a division of MetLife Bank, N.A. and a member of the MetLife family of companies. Brenen has 12 years of experience in the home-financing industry.
• Otak Inc., an urban designing, planning and engineering firm, hired Douglas Sarkkinen as a senior structural engineer and project manager in the firm’s Vancouver office. Sarkkinen has nearly 25 years of experience with concrete structures and bridges. He will manage projects and the design of transportation structures as part of the firm’s transportation infrastructure services team. He designed and managed several of bridges in Clark County, including the Klineline Bridge replacement on Northeast Highway 99 over Salmon Creek, the Salmon Creek Bridge replacement on Northeast 72nd Avenue, and the Washougal River Bridge replacement.
• Robert DuCote was appointed Small Business Administration deputy district director for Oregon and Southwest Washington. DuCote has served in the federal government and military for 14 years. He served as an assistant deputy program executive officer for the Department of Navy’s Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Intelligence Program Executive Office.
• Vicki Fitzsimmons with the Edward Jones firm at 9901 N.E. Seventh Ave., achieved the professional designation of accredited asset management specialist. Fitzsimmons completed the AAMS professional education program from the Denver-based College for Financial Planning.
• Dr. Marilyn Darr is the 2010 president of the medical staff at Southwest Washington Medical Center. Dr. Marty Bell, who is medical director of Southwest’s Emergency Services, is president-elect. Other officers are Dr. Robert Douglass, Dr. Christopher Rubano and Dr. Brad Jensen. There are 1,000 physicians who practice at the hospital.
• Kris Cavin, a financial representative with Country Financial, has been inducted into the Emerald Club. He and four other representatives were included for 2009. Cavin lives in Camas and his office is at 16821 S.W. McGillivray Blvd., Suite 213.
New business news
• Michael’s Floor Covering has opened at 2200-A N.E. Andresen Road, at the former site of Studer’s Floor Covering. Evie and Mike Haasl, who own Michael’s, will sell and install carpet, vinyl, tile and laminate flooring. The business employs eight people. A grand opening is planned for March 4.
Other business news
• Rebound Orthopedics and Neurosurgery has opened a new Rapid Access Clinic for same- or next-day service for immediate care injuries. Rebound physicians opened the service to provide urgent, high-quality specialty orthopedic or neurosurgical care while minimizing patient inconvenience and expense. The orthopedic and neurosurgery clinic has offices at Southwest Washington Medical Center, Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center and Portland’s Rose Quarter. They also have a physical therapy and hand therapy practice at Legacy Salmon Creek.
• Southwest Washington Medical Center is expanding its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The expansion will add eight Level 3 NICU beds to the Holtzman Twins Special Care Nursery in the Family Birth Center. Part of the funding for the expansion comes from a gift from the family of David and Patricia Nierenberg. The project is expected to be completed this summer.
• Blairco Inc., which has been providing heating and cooling services to the Clark County area since 1987, has received a 2009 Angie’s List Super Service Award. Angie’s List is the nation’s leading provider of consumer ratings on local service companies. Angie’s List Super Service Award winners have maintained a total and overall grade of A, have received a minimum number of reports, and are not in the Angie’s List Penalty Box.
