A 21-year-old Camas man died early Sunday morning when the ground beneath his truck’s tires gave way and he tumbled into a pit near Larch Mountain.

John D. Totton was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

Totton was ejected from the vehicle when it fell into Jackson Pit. He was not wearing a seat belt.

A preliminary investigation found that alcohol may have been a factor.

The Clark County Traffic/Homicide Unit is investigating the incident.

“The setting was a party where lots of drinking was going on,” said Clark County Sheriff’s Detective Alex Schoening.

A toxicology report is not expected back for several weeks.
