Daniel Thurston, 19, who was shot in the neck during an alleged robbery in Hazel Dell on Tuesday night, remained in critical condition Friday night in intensive care at Southwest Washington Medical Center.

The shooting was reported at 8:51 p.m. Tuesday at the Parklane Apartments, 10205 N.E. Notchlog Drive in Hazel Dell. Upon arriving, deputies found Thurston lying on the ground, unable to speak, with his throat wounded. His spine was severed by the bullet; he is paralyzed from the neck down.

The next night, after a brief stand-off, Clark County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Damian R. Grover, 17, at the Crown Plaza apartments in the same area of Hazel Dell, on suspicion of shooting Thurston.

Friday night, Grover remained in custody at the county juvenile detention center, with bail set at $750,000, on accusations of attempted first-degree murder and first-degree robbery, a jail employee said.

Grover was remanded to adult court and is to appear in court again on Nov. 4.

Also Friday, a friend of Thurston’s, Jeremy Searcy, said a contribution account in Thurston’s name to help with medical expenses, has been opened at the Columbia Credit Union branch at 808 N.E. 98th Circle, off 99th Street, in Hazel Dell. Thurston has no health insurance, Searcy said.

Both Thurston and Grover attended Columbia River High School at times, according to court documents.
