SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) — Longshot Mabou, ridden by Robert Walsh, outfinished Irish invader Dirar inside the final hurdle to win the $100,000 New York Turf Writers Steeplechase by 5 34 lengths Thursday at Saratoga Race Course.

The 8-year-old gelding ran 2 3/8 miles in 4:40 and earned $60,000 for new owners Drawing Away Stables and David Jacobson, who is also the trainer. Mabou paid $35, $14 and $8.50. Dirar returned $4.90 and $4, and Dynaski, third of nine, paid $4.40 to show.

Three horses fell during the running. Sermon of Love and Decoy Daddy went down on the final turn, an incident for which the fourth finisher, Divine Fortune, was disqualified and placed last. Straight to It fell at the last fence. None of the horses or riders was injured.
