Weather Eye: Drizzle to hang around; Labor Day holiday likely warm

We managed to receive some light drizzle around the county Monday, causing a few drivers to actually turn on the windshield wipers. But skies partially cleared later in the day but high temperatures hovered in the low 70s. That will be the case Tuesday and Wednesday with more clouds and some drizzle here and there. Temperatures will be around 70 degrees plus or minus a few.

Looking ahead towards the last big summer weekend, Labor Day, high pressure is expected to strengthen in the region and give us warm and sunny weather with highs well into the 80s. The extended computer models show some cold air beginning to pool in the Bering Sea and that could be a mechanism to generate a few early fall rainstorms for the West Coast in September, so we will keep a weather eye out for that.

Meanwhile, nature is fast at work getting ready for the change of seasons that is almost upon us. There are tons of spiders attending their webs just about everywhere it seems. Grasshoppers are all over the fields and the ants are busy hoarding food for the long, cold winter ahead. I have had many readers inform me that they have observed those pesky insects inside the house and in the pantry packing out as many crumbs as they can.

I hate to think of winter already when we are still enjoying the summer weather, albeit a bit cooler for a few days. I did pick a large bowl of tomatoes over the weekend and the first few ears of sweet corn. For a while there I didn’t know if much of the garden would ripen but it has. How is your garden doing this cooler-than-average summer?

Despite a light drizzle in the early morning hours things are still really dry and fire danger will certainly increase as we get closer to the weekend.

Enjoy summer!
