I-5 bridge southbound to be closed tonight

Paving also planned for area north of bridge

Drive anywhere you want tonight, but going south on Interstate 5 isn’t likely to be very rewarding.

The Oregon Department of Transportation is planning to close the southbound Interstate 5 Bridge between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. for maintenance of the drawbridge. The northbound span isn’t affected.

During the closure southbound traffic will be diverted east on Highway 14 to Interstate 205.

Meanwhile the Washington State Department of Transportation’s contractors are continuing to work on repaving the first 2.35 miles of the freeway from the bridge to approximately 39th Street. That work begins about 10 p.m. and also wraps up around 5 a.m. The paving is in both directions and depends on the weather, but it is supposed to be dry enough tonight for crews to lay hot asphalt.

So far the work has mostly been on the onramps and offramps, but watch for lane closures. Better yet, just don’t go there.

If you’re sitting comfortably at home and want to watch the traffic back up, check the WEBCAMS.
