DO YOU HAVE A SUGGESTION?

• Each week, The Columbian offers a brief snapshot of an interesting Clark County business. Send ideas to Mary Ricks: mary.ricks@columbian.com; fax 360-735-4598; phone 360-735-4550.

What the business does: Montage Pet Boarding provides secure shelter for dogs and cats when owners need someone to care for their pets. Montage has large outdoor play yards and kennel staff continually monitor the health of the animals in their care. The kennel also offers pet grooming and will administer owner-provided medication.

How has the economy affected your business: When the economy was thriving, people were on the go and had a need for his services, said Steve Greenberg. In recent years, people have taken far fewer trips. With consumers looking for every opportunity to save money, pet owners also are more willing to ask friends, neighbors or relatives to look after their animals, he said.

Greatest challenge: The greatest challenge is adjusting to a shrinking consumer market while at the same time dealing with the cost of the minimum wage, payroll taxes, property taxes, utilities and supplies, which are all increasing. Making a business presence known to new customers is more challenging and requires more resources.

What’s ahead: Greenberg said he hopes the economy doesn’t get worse in the next six to eight months so he can keep his prices and service levels steady.
