NEW YORK (AP) — Johannesburg Smile held off Gallant Fields by a half-length Friday in the $71,000 allowance feature at Aqueduct.
Irad Ortiz, Jr. guided the 6-year-old to his eighth victory in 29 starts as he left the Dominic Galluscio barn a winner. Johannesburg Smile will now be trained by Todd Pletcher as new owner Mike Repole claimed him for $100,000.
The time was 1:40.52 for a mile and 70 yards.
Johannesburg Smile paid $17, $6.40 and $3.90. Gallant Fields returned $3 and $2.50, and Private Tale paid $2.90 to show.
