Five daytime burglaries that occurred within the past 10 days have Vancouver police warning residents to take extra precaution when they leave home.

The burglaries all took place in or near the Harney Heights neighborhood between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m.

Burglars gained access to the houses through rear sliding glass doors and windows, Cmdr. Dave King said, and took portable, valuable items such as laptops and jewelry.

“If you’re not home, which most of these people weren’t, make sure your house doesn’t look like an inviting target,” King said.

Vancouver police have suggestions to keep people from falling victim to burglary, including: installing deadbolts, laying a wooden stick on the tracks to brace a sliding door shut, installing an alarm system and getting to know your neighbors.
