W. Carolina outlasts Elon in 27-24 overtime win

CULLOWHEE, N.C. (AP) — Troy Mitchell threw two touchdowns as Western Carolina snapped its 26-game Southern Conference losing streak with a thrilling 27-24 overtime win Saturday night against Elon.

Western Carolina (2-7, 1-4) went into halftime trailing 21-10. Mitchell found Michael Helms Jr. for a 6-yard score as the Catamounts capped 12-play, 76-yard drive to cut the lead to 21-17 in the third quarter.

Elon’s John Gallagher hit a 48-yard field goal with 3:37 left to play. Western Carolina drove 88 yards in 14 plays, and Mitchell hit Karnorris Benson for a 6-yard score with 9 seconds left to tie it at 24. Benson finished with six catches for 129 yards and two scores.

Elon (2-7, 1-4) went 3-and-out in overtime, and Gallagher missed his 44-yard attempt. Western Carolina also stalled on its possession, but Richard Sigmon drilled his 39-yard field goal to give Western Carolina the win.
