CULLOWHEE, N.C. (AP) — Troy Mitchell threw for 350 yards and three touchdowns to lead Western Carolina past Mars Hill 30-23 on Saturday.

Mitchell, who was 20 of 35, consistently found wide receiver Karnorris Benson, who had nine receptions for 212 yards and three touchdowns.

Western Carolina (1-3) won the opening toss and scored on its first possession, a 21-yard field goal by Richard Sigmon. A touchdown rush at the goal line by Shaun Warren put the Catamounts up 10-0 at halftime.

Mars Hill came back with 21 unanswered points in the second half before Mitchell again connected with Benson on an 80-yard touchdown pass. Two more Mitchell-to-Benson touchdown passes in the fourth quarter, including a 33-yarder with six minutes left in the game, put the Catamounts back in the lead for the win.

This was the first win of the season for the Catamounts. The Lions drop to 1-2.
