On a recent visit to the hospital, I noticed a sign on the door that stated “weapons free zone.” This sign is designed, I believe, to make people feel more comfortable and have a sense of security. This sign does just the opposite for me; it makes me feel less comfortable.
A weapons-free zone only disarms the law-abiding gun carrier and creates a target for violence. A criminal or mentally disturbed individual will not obey the sign, but instead bring weapons inside. These zones stop law-abiding citizens from protecting themselves and others around them. If someone wants to create a scene, they know the best place is somewhere there will be little opposition. A weapons-free zone will have neither resistance nor a quick response. A great deal of damage can be made in a very short period of time if the perpetrator is not stopped.
Revoking the rights of citizens is not the way to create a safe and secure environment. Gun-free zones are just asking for violent crimes.
