Officials say that a Washougal man whose body was recovered from the Columbia River in Washougal Wednesday morning died of an accidental drowning.

At about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, friends and family of John Wagoner, 68, filed a missing persons report after he did not show up to an event he was expected to attend, according to the Clark County Medical Examiner’s Office and the Washougal Police Department.

The night before, Nov. 24, a friend dropped Wagoner off near the Port of Camas-Washougal, where Wagoner lived on a boat, according to Washougal police Sgt. Thad Eakins.

Police and friends searched the area that night, but could not locate Wagoner.

On Wednesday morning, friends patrolled the area and found Wagoner’s body under the pier about 100 yards downstream from where he was last seen, Eakins said. A dive team from Multnomah County, Ore., recovered his body at about 11 a.m.

The medical examiner’s office determined that Wagoner died of an accidental drowning, and Eakins said there is no criminal investigation into the incident.
